A1.2 Interactive Exercises

The second stage of the beginner level: possessive articles, personal pronouns, the imperative, prepositions of time, negation and the Perfekt.

A1.2 Building Blocks: Learning to Build Sentences

A1.2 is the second stop on the journey: you now build real sentences on the foundations you met in A1.1. You practise expressing intentions with modal and separable verbs (ich kann, ich stehe auf), putting the object correctly into the Akkusativ, and using possessive and personal pronouns in this case. Saying that something exists (es gibt einen Park), choosing between nicht and kein in negation, giving instructions with the imperative and placing prepositions of time such as "um zwei Uhr" and "am Montag" also fall into place at this stage. Finally, you learn to set two things side by side with simple comparisons.

The exercises below are designed to reinforce exactly these structures. You can pick a topic and finish the imperative, move on to the Akkusativ and then to modal verbs at your own pace, and go back to wherever you got stuck whenever you like. The explanation after each answer shows you right away why an answer was incorrect. It helps anyone who wants to consolidate A1, especially those preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat A1 or telc Deutsch A1 exam, because these building blocks are the patterns you will rely on most, both in the exam and in everyday conversation.
