A1 Separable Verb Exercises (trennbare Verben)

Some German verbs begin with a small prefix, and when you build a sentence this prefix splits off from the verb and goes to the end. These are called separable verbs. For example, "aufstehen" (to get up) looks like this in a sentence: "Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf." (I get up at seven o'clock.) And "einkaufen" (to go shopping): "Wir kaufen heute ein." (We are going shopping today.) As you can see, the conjugated part of the verb (stehe, kaufen) comes after the subject, and the prefix (auf, ein) drops to the end of the sentence. A few examples are enough to pick this up very quickly.

📌
Golden rule: In a main clause the separable prefix goes to the end: aufstehen → ich stehe früh auf; the stress is always on the prefix.

On this page you try, in every question, to put the prefix in the right place in the sentence, usually at the end. When you make a mistake, a short note shows where the prefix should go, so you learn the right answer straight away; you reinforce the topic by building sentences rather than memorising. Repeating the rule "conjugated part in position 2, prefix at the very end" turns separating into a reflex. A good start for anyone preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1, because these verbs are used all the time to describe daily routines (getting up, shopping, starting). Work at your own pace; every correct answer builds confidence for the next.
