A1 · MODALVERBEN
A1 Modal Verb Exercises (können, müssen, wollen)

Modal verbs help you say that you can, want to or have to do something. These helping verbs are conjugated in the sentence, while the main verb goes to the very end in the infinitive. For example: "Ich kann gut schwimmen." (I can swim well.) or "Wir müssen heute lernen." (We have to study today.) Here you learn the verbs können (can), müssen (must, have to), wollen (want), dürfen (may, be allowed to), sollen (should) and mögen (like).

📌
Golden rule: The modal verb is conjugated in position 2; the main verb goes to the VERY END as an unconjugated INFINITIVE: "Ich kann gut Deutsch sprechen."

On this page you choose the right modal verb for the sentence and place the conjugated verb and the infinitive at the end correctly. After each answer a short note shows whether it is right or wrong and why, so you reinforce both choosing the right modal and the rule that the infinitive always goes to the end. Very suitable for beginners who want to get "can, must, want" clear in German. Sentences about permission, obligation and wishes come up often in the Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1. Repeat as often as you like until you can tell these six verbs apart with confidence.
