A1 Komparativ Exercises: Learn to Make Comparisons

When German compares two things, the adjective usually takes the ending "-er", followed by the word "als" (than). So "groß" (big, tall) becomes "größer als": "Anna ist größer als Tom", meaning "Anna is taller than Tom." Most adjectives follow this rule, but some are irregular and have to be memorised. The most important one is "gut" (good): in comparisons it becomes "besser". "Mein Kaffee ist besser als dein Tee", meaning "My coffee is better than your tea." On this page you will repeat this simple pattern many times.

📌
Golden rule: Add -er to the adjective and use "als" in comparisons; some adjectives take an umlaut: alt → älter, "groß → größer".

On this page you form or choose the comparative of the adjective yourself in every question. As soon as you answer, you see whether it is right or wrong and get a short, clear explanation; seeing the regular "-er + als" pattern next to irregular forms like "gut → besser" helps both stick. Very suitable for beginners who are not yet confident with "größer als" and "besser". If you are preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1, sentences comparing people and things come up often. You will feel a little more confident with every question.
