A1 · VOKALWECHSEL VERBEN
A1 Exercises: Verbs with a Stem Vowel Change (Vokalwechsel)

In German, some verbs change the vowel in their stem in the du (you) and er/sie/es (he/she/it) forms. These are called verbs with a stem vowel change. For example, fahren (to go, to drive) becomes du fährst; the a turns into ä. geben (to give) becomes du gibst and lesen (to read) becomes du liest; here the e turns into i or ie. Important: the change only happens with du and er/sie/es; ich, wir, ihr and sie keep the stem as it is.

📌
Golden rule: Some verbs change their stem vowel in the 2nd/3rd person singular: e → i/ie and a → ä (du fährst, er liest).

This page is designed to give you a feel for exactly this vowel change. For each question you choose the correct form and then read an explanation: why it is correct, or which vowel changes and how. Seeing "a → ä" and "e → i/ie" again and again in both the du and the er form trains your ear for these verbs. If you are preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1, forms like fährst, gibst and liest are among the most common. Work at your own pace; after a few rounds the right form comes naturally.
