A1 · ES GIBT AKKUSATIV
A1 Exercises: "es gibt" and the Accusative

The "es gibt" pattern is the easiest way to say "there is". For example: "Es gibt einen Park" (There is a park). The key point: the noun after "es gibt" is always in the Akkusativ (accusative). That is why we say "den" instead of "der" and "einen" instead of "ein". In the negative we use "kein": "Es gibt keine Bank" (There is no bank), "Es gibt keinen Bus" (There is no bus). So to say whether something exists or not, you use "es gibt" and then choose the right article in the Akkusativ.

📌
Golden rule: After es gibt the object is always in the Akkusativ: es gibt einen/eine/ein.

On this page you choose the right accusative article for each sentence (einen, eine, ein / keinen, keine, kein). As soon as you answer, you see whether it is right or wrong, and if it is wrong a short explanation tells you which article belongs there and why. That way you learn the "den or einen" decision by doing it. Ideal for beginners who still get stuck on "es gibt", and a good Akkusativ exercise for anyone preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1. Work through positive and negative sentences mixed together; the difference becomes clear after a few questions.
