A1 Imperative (Imperativ) Exercises: Komm! Kommt! Kommen Sie!

The imperative (Imperativ) is the form you use to tell someone to do something. In German there are three forms, depending on who you are talking to. To a friend you use the "du" form: Komm! (Come!). To more than one person you use the "ihr" form: Kommt! (Come!). To someone you do not know, or want to show respect to, you use the "Sie" form: Kommen Sie! (Please come!). So the same verb changes depending on the person you are speaking to.

📌
Golden rule: In the du imperative the pronoun and -st are dropped ("Komm!"); with "ihr" the verb ends in -t ("Kommt!"), and with "Sie" the order is verb + Sie: "Kommen Sie!"

On this page you learn the imperative by doing it: for each question you choose or write the correct form, and your answer comes back straight away with a short explanation. Step by step you understand when to use "du", "ihr" and "Sie"; with the formal "Sie" form in particular, the examples show that the verb comes first and the pronoun follows it. A well-timed practice for beginners and for anyone preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1, because requests and instructions come up all the time in everyday life. Try it at your own pace.
