Negation: nicht oder kein (negation)

In German you make a sentence negative with nicht or kein; which one you use depends on what is being negated. kein also takes the same endings as ein. You will make the right choice yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

A1 Negation: "nicht" and "kein" Exercises

To say "no" or "not" in German, you use two small words: nicht and kein. To make a verb or an adjective negative, you use nicht: "Ich komme nicht." (I'm not coming.) If a noun has an indefinite article (ein/eine) or no article at all, you use kein: "Ich habe kein Auto." (I don't have a car.) "Das ist keine Banane." (That isn't a banana.) In short: nicht for verbs and adjectives, kein for nouns without an article or with an indefinite article. A few examples are enough to grasp the difference.
