A1.1 Basics: Exercises for Your First Steps in German

A1.1 is the very start of your German journey: the first half of level A1, followed by A1.2. This is where you build the skeleton of the language. First you learn that every noun has a gender (der/die/das) and a plural form, then you learn to conjugate regular verbs and use vital verbs like sein and haben: "Ich bin müde", "Wir haben Zeit". With personal pronouns, simple sentence structure and question words (Wer? Was? Wie?) you put together your first dialogues. Numbers and time open the door to everyday life, and the gern pattern, as in "Ich spiele gern Fußball", lets you talk about the things you like.

Each topic has its own exercise, and you can work through them one by one in any order. As soon as you answer a question, you see not just "correct/incorrect" but also a short note explaining why the answer is what it is. That way you grasp the logic behind an article instead of memorising it, and correct your mistake on the spot. This stage gives a solid foundation to A1 learners starting from scratch and to anyone preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat A1 or telc Deutsch A1 exam; as you progress, you can clearly see which topics you are comfortable with and what you need to revise.
