Perfekt (haben / sein + Partizip II)
The past tense of spoken German: the auxiliary (haben/sein) is conjugated in position 2 and the Partizip II stands at the end of the sentence. sein: verbs of movement such as gehen, fahren, kommen and changes of state such as aufstehen, einschlafen; haben: everything else. In five steps you recognise, choose, evaluate and write it yourself. All exercise content is in German.
Recognise: match the infinitive with its Partizip II.
Matched: 0 / 10Perfekt A1 – haben or sein, and which Partizip?
The Perfekt is the main way to talk about the past in everyday speech, and it is built from two parts: the auxiliary in position 2 and the Partizip II at the end of the sentence. Many learners get stuck on two points: should the auxiliary be haben or sein, and does the Partizip end in ge-…-t or ge-…-en? This exercise practises both in separate steps.
Work through it in order: first match the infinitive with its Partizip, then choose haben or sein, then the Partizip form, weed out the incorrect sentences and finally write it yourself. Every answer is followed by a short explanation that reminds you of the rule. For anyone finishing A1 and preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat A1 or telc Deutsch A1, the Perfekt is one of the most important structures.
