A1.1 · Uhrzeit

Uhrzeit (telling the time)

In German you can tell the time in two ways. Officially: number + Uhr (drei Uhr = 3:00). In everyday speech you use Viertel nach (quarter past), Viertel vor (quarter to) and halb. Careful: halb vier = 3:30 (half an hour before four), not 4:30. You will work out the correct phrases yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the time with the way it is said in everyday speech. halb = half an hour before the next hour.

A1 Telling the Time (Uhrzeit) Exercises: Official and Everyday Time

In German there are two ways of telling the time. In everyday speech we use the words "Viertel nach" (quarter past), "halb" (half) and "vor" (to). For 8:15, for example, we say "Viertel nach acht". The interesting one is "halb": for 8:30 you do not say "halb acht" but "halb neun" (half an hour before nine), because you count towards the next hour. With official time you simply read out the numbers: for 8:30 you say "acht Uhr dreißig". On this page you learn both ways step by step.

📌
Golden rule: For official time, say the numbers in order; in everyday speech nach means past, vor means to, and halb points to the next hour.

In these exercises you write and choose the given time in both its everyday and its official form. After every answer you see whether it is right or wrong and understand why from a short explanation; in particular, the fact that "halb" points to the next hour and the difference between "vor" and "nach" sink in by doing. Suitable for beginners who want to say the time quickly. Appointments and times are an important basic for the Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1, and this practice gives you confidence with them. Work at your own pace and repeat the times that confuse you a few times.
