Zahlen (numbers)

Numbers are a cornerstone of A1 German. 13–19 end in -zehn, the tens end in -zig (and dreißig); in compound numbers the units come first (einundzwanzig = 21). hundert and tausend build the large numbers. You will work out the correct forms yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

A1 German Numbers (Zahlen 0–100): Exercises

On this page you learn the German numbers from 0 to 100 (Zahlen). The most surprising rule appears in compound numbers: the units come first, then the tens. So for "21" you say "einundzwanzig", literally "one and twenty". In the same way "32" becomes "zweiunddreißig" (two and thirty). You say the smaller digit first, then "und" (and), and the larger one last. Once you get used to it, it becomes very easy.

📌
Golden rule: From 21 on, the units come first, then the tens, and it is all written as one word: einundzwanzig, zweiunddreißig.

The most practical way to reinforce this reversed order is to write and choose the numbers yourself, and that is exactly what this page has you do. After each answer you get a confirmation if it is right, or an explanation showing exactly where you went wrong, so the "einundzwanzig" logic settles in by doing. Ideal for beginners who want to understand numbers instantly when they hear or read them. In the Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1, numbers come up all the time in the listening and reading parts. Start slowly; after a few rounds the reversed order becomes automatic.
