A1 · PERSONALPRONOMEN NOMINATIV
A1 Personal Pronoun (Personalpronomen) Exercises – Nominative

Personal pronouns are small but very important words that answer the question "who?" in a sentence. In German they are: ich (I), du (you), er/sie/es (he/she/it), wir (we), ihr (you, plural) and sie/Sie (they / you – formal). The nominative is the form used for the subject, so it shows who is doing the action. For example: "Ich lerne Deutsch." (I am learning German.) or "Du bist nett." (You are nice.) As you can see, the sentence makes sense as soon as you choose the right pronoun.

📌
Golden rule: Personal pronouns in the nominative are the subject of the sentence and determine the verb form: ich, du, er/sie/es, wir, ihr, sie/Sie; "Du bist hier."

In the questions on this page you complete the missing subject with the right pronoun, so instead of memorising the pronouns you learn them by choosing them in context. As soon as you answer, a short explanation appears and you see straight away why it is "sie" and not "er". A good start for beginners who want to sort out the "ich, du, er" mix-up once and for all. Anyone studying for the Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 can also use it to strengthen this foundation. Do not be afraid of making mistakes; every attempt makes you a little more confident.
