A1 German Sentence Building: Statements and Questions

In a German statement the verb always comes second. First comes who or what, then immediately the verb: "Ich lerne Deutsch." (I am learning German) or "Anna kommt heute." (Anna is coming today). There are two ways to ask a question. In a W-question the sentence starts with a question word and the verb is again in second place: "Wo wohnst du?" (Where do you live?). In a yes/no question, however, the verb moves to the very front: "Lernst du Deutsch?" (Are you learning German?). In short, the position of the verb decides the type of sentence.

📌
Golden rule: In a statement the verb is in position 2, in a yes/no question in position 1: Du lernst Deutsch → Lernst du Deutsch?

On this page you build sentences yourself by choosing the right position and form of the verb in each one. When you finish a sentence, a step-by-step explanation shows why the verb is in that position, so you grasp the rule by trying things out rather than by memorising it. Very well suited to beginners who want to see the difference between a statement, a W-question and a yes/no question. This word order is also a solid foundation for the Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1. Moving words around and seeing the result straight away is the most lasting way to learn the rule.
