A1 · HABEN KONJUGATION
Conjugating "haben": A1 Exercises

In German, the verb "haben" means "to have" and is used very often. Its form changes with the subject: ich habe (I have), du hast (you have), er/sie/es hat, wir haben, ihr habt, sie/Sie haben. For example, you can say "Ich habe einen Hund" (I have a dog) or "Du hast Zeit" (You have time). The forms most often mixed up are "du hast" and "er hat", because the "b" of the stem disappears in these two. All you need to do is first recognise these six forms and then repeat them plenty of times.

📌
Golden rule: "haben" is irregular: in du hast and er/sie/es hat the "b" of the stem disappears; the other forms are regular ("ich habe, wir haben").

On this page you choose the correct form yourself. After each answer you see a confirmation if it is right, or a short note showing which form belongs there and why if it is wrong; that way you learn by doing rather than by rote. Seeing forms like "du hast" and "er hat", where the "b" disappears, again and again makes them stick. Just right for anyone studying for the Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 who wants to get the conjugation of "haben" firmly in place. Work at your own pace, as often as you like.
