C1.2 Exercises: Modus, Modalität and Connectors

You are at the second stage of C1: here you work on the tone of the language and the logic between sentences. On the one hand you deal with mood and modality: Konjunktiv I for reported speech (including its past form: "Er sagte, er habe es nicht gewusst") and the past Konjunktiv II (hätte … müssen), modal verbs in their subjective use, which add conjecture and distance, and Modalpartikeln such as doch, wohl, eben. On the other hand you refine how you link sentences: Genitiv prepositions such as aufgrund and angesichts, paired connectors such as weder … noch and sowohl … als auch, Konnektoradverbien such as trotzdem and deshalb, and the word order they determine.

You progress by finishing one topic and moving on to the next; every question comes with explained feedback. Because you see with an example why Konjunktiv II rather than I is needed, or why the verb moves to that position after a connector, you correct your mistake immediately. These exercises speak directly to C1 learners who want to master reported speech and complex sentence structures, especially for the writing and reading tasks when preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat C1 and telc Deutsch C1.
