The exercise itself is in German; the explanation pages it links to are in Turkish.

C1.2 · Modalität

Modalverben: subjektiver Gebrauch (modal verbs expressing assumption and hearsay)

In their subjective use, modal verbs express assumption or hearsay: muss (almost certain), dürfte (probably), könnte (possibly), soll (others say so), will (the person claims it themselves), mag (perhaps/concession). For the past the pattern is 'muss … gemacht haben'. You will work out the correct form yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match each sentence with its English meaning. The subjective use expresses an assumption or a claim, the objective use an obligation or a wish.

C1 Exercises: Subjective Modal Verbs (subjektiver Gebrauch)

At C1, modal verbs take on a second layer of meaning: they no longer mark ability or obligation, but the speaker's attitude towards a statement. "Sollen" reports hearsay whose truth is not guaranteed: "Der neue Chef soll sehr streng sein" (so people say). "Wollen" gives the subject's own claim about themselves, often met with scepticism: "Er will den ganzen Roman an einem Tag gelesen haben." "Müssen" and "dürfen", on the other hand, are the speaker's inference; "müssen" marks a strong, almost certain assumption ("Sie muss schon zu Hause sein"), while "dürfte" signals a cautious probability ("Das dürfte stimmen"). When referring to the past, the structure is usually modal verb + Infinitiv II: "Er soll im Ausland studiert haben."

📌
Golden rule: In the subjective (assumption) use, muss marks strong probability, dürfte a likely assumption, könnte a possibility; soll/will report someone else's or the subject's own claim.

The exercise asks you to identify which subjective meaning is at work in each sentence; as soon as you mark your answer, short feedback appears with the correct option and the reason. That way you reinforce the fine difference between "soll" and "will", or between a certain "muss" and a cautious "dürfte", by trying it out. Telling hearsay from inference is often tested in the reading and listening sections of Goethe-Zertifikat C1, telc C1 and TestDaF, while the DSH tests whether you can conjugate these structures correctly in writing. Especially if you get stuck on past reference with Infinitiv II or on the personal forms, instant correction lets you see your mistake before it becomes a habit.
