C1.2 · Satzklammer und Mittelfeld

Satzklammer & Mittelfeld (sentence bracket and word order)

In a German sentence the finite verb is in position 2 and the second part of the verb (Partizip/Infinitiv/separable prefix) comes at the very end: this is the »Satzklammer«. In the middle (Mittelfeld) the elements are usually arranged in te-ka-mo-lo order: temporal (time) → kausal (reason) → modal (manner) → lokal (place). You will work out the correct order yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

C1 Exercises: Sentence Bracket and Mittelfeld Order (Satzklammer & te-ka-mo-lo)

In a German sentence the finite verb stands in second position, while a separable prefix, the past participle (Partizip II) or an infinitive goes to the end. The part between these two ends is called the Mittelfeld. In the sentence "Ich habe meiner Schwester gestern wegen des Sturms aus Sorge nicht rechtzeitig die wichtigen Unterlagen geschickt", for example, "habe … geschickt" forms the bracket (Satzklammer) and all the other elements are lined up in between. The working rule for ordering them is te-ka-mo-lo: temporal (gestern), kausal (wegen des Sturms), modal (aus Sorge), lokal – that is, time, reason, manner, place. In addition, the dative object usually comes before the accusative object, and stressed new information shifts towards the end.

📌
Golden rule: The finite verb is in position 2 and the second verb part goes to the end; everything in between is the Mittelfeld: Ich habe … gekauft.

Here you put scattered elements into the correct Mittelfeld order and complete the bracket; after every answer you get instant feedback with reasons: you see why each element ends up in its position and how te-ka-mo-lo or the order of objects works, so you understand the logic instead of memorising mistakes. In Goethe-Zertifikat C1, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, TestDaF and DSH, whether the written part reads fluently and naturally depends largely on command of this ordering; it is a practical consolidation tool, especially for learners who write long sentences and struggle with word order in "dass" and "weil" clauses.
