C1.2 · Gehobene Konnektoren

Konnektoren & Subjunktionen (gehoben) (advanced connectors)

Advanced connectors carry subtle differences in meaning: falls (=wenn, condition), sofern (provided that), es sei denn (unless), zumal (especially because), je nachdem (depending on), ungeachtet (despite, +Genitiv). You will work out the correct connector yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the connector from written German with its meaning. Condition, assumption, exception, restriction and consequence are separate patterns.

C1 · KONNEKTOREN GEHOBEN
C1 Exercises: Formal Connectors (gehobene Konnektoren)

The advanced connectors that set the tone of academic and formal German add subtler shades of meaning than everyday equivalents such as "aber" or "weil". "Indes" stresses a contrast or simultaneity (Die Theorie überzeugt, indes fehlen die Belege). "Zumal" presents a reason and reinforces it (Der Schritt war riskant, zumal die Mittel knapp waren). "Sofern" sets up a condition (Sofern keine Einwände bestehen, fahren wir fort), "ungeachtet" disregards an obstacle (ungeachtet der Kritik), and "gleichwohl" states a result despite a contradiction. Each of these connectors requires its own word order and register; using them correctly is decisive in written production.

📌
Golden rule: In elevated written style, ungeachtet + Genitiv behaves like a preposition, while indes/mithin behave like adverbs; their position in the sentence determines the word order.

The exercises test whether you choose each connector correctly in context and fit it into the sentence structure. After every question you get instant feedback with an explanation: you see why "sofern" rather than "zumal" is needed, or why the verb moves to the end. This approach is particularly valuable for anyone preparing for the writing sections of Goethe-Zertifikat and telc C1, text production in TestDaF and the advanced grammar part of the DSH, because these connectors are exactly the structures examiners look for as "an advanced command of the language".
