C1.2 · Konjunktiv I Vergangenheit

Konjunktiv I (Vergangenheit): habe/sei + Partizip II (the past in reported speech)

In reported speech, the past is formed with the compound Konjunktiv I: »er habe … Partizip II« (haben verbs) and »er sei … Partizip II« (sein verbs). E.g. »Ich habe gearbeitet« → »Er sagte, er habe gearbeitet«; »Ich bin gekommen« → »Er sagte, er sei gekommen«. You will work out the correct form yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: in reported speech, Präteritum, Perfekt and Plusquamperfekt all collapse into a single past form. Match the Indikativ with its reported form.

Konjunktiv I Past: C1 Reported Speech (indirekte Rede) Exercises

When you report something that happened in the past in indirect speech (indirekte Rede), you use the past form of Konjunktiv I. The structure is fixed: the Konjunktiv I form of "sein" or "haben" + Partizip II. In other words, you take the Perfekt and put the auxiliary into Konjunktiv I. The direct sentence "Sie sagte: 'Ich bin gekommen'" becomes "Sie sagte, sie sei gekommen" in reported speech. With verbs that do not express movement, "haben" is used: "Er behauptete, er habe das Buch gelesen." Even if the speaker was talking in the past, a single past form of Konjunktiv I is enough; and because "sei"/"habe" differ from the Indikativ, they create a neutral, distanced reporting tone that you will often meet in news language.

📌
Golden rule: The past in reported speech has just ONE form: habe/sei + Partizip II: "er habe gesagt", "sie sei gegangen."

Every time you answer a question you get instant feedback: you see, with an explanation, whether you chose "sei" or "habe" correctly and whether you formed the Partizip II correctly, and why. That way you reinforce not just the result but the logic of the rule. The Konjunktiv I past helps you in the written and spoken parts of Goethe and telc C1, and in TestDaF and the DSH, whenever you need to report a source while keeping it separate from your own words. Whether you are summarising an article, relaying an interview or presenting someone else's claim in an academic text, your ability to form it with ease grows step by step.
