C1.2 · Doppelkonjunktionen

Doppelkonjunktionen: sowohl…als auch, weder…noch (paired conjunctions)

Paired conjunctions link two elements and give a text balance and emphasis: sowohl … als auch (both … and), weder … noch (neither … nor), nicht nur … sondern auch (not only … but also), entweder … oder (either … or), zwar … aber (admittedly … but). You will work out the correct form yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match each two-part conjunction with its meaning. The basic patterns from B1 are joined by patterns from written language.

C1 · DOPPELKONJUNKTIONEN
C1 Paired Conjunctions (Doppelkonjunktionen) Exercises

Paired conjunctions link two elements of a sentence with a two-part pattern, and each part has to sit in the right place. "Sowohl Deutsch als auch Türkisch" affirms two things together; "weder Zeit noch Geld" negates both at once (and contains no "nicht/kein"); "entweder du rufst an oder du schreibst" imposes a choice. In "nicht nur … sondern auch", "sondern" is set off by a comma: "Sie spricht nicht nur fließend, sondern auch akzentfrei." Note: when this group moves to the start of the sentence, subject and verb are inverted: "Nicht nur spricht sie fließend, sondern …". "Zwar … aber" balances a contrast after a concession: "Das Buch ist zwar dick, aber leicht zu lesen." The real difficulty is not knowing the meaning but getting the verb and subject order right after "noch/oder/sondern".

📌
Golden rule: Two-part conjunctions are fixed patterns: entweder…oder, sowohl…als auch, nicht nur…sondern auch.

Each gap is marked as soon as you fill it in; if your answer is correct you see why, and if it is incorrect a short note explains which pattern requires which word order. That way you see your mistake on the spot, for example when you negate once with "weder … noch" or try out the inversion after "Nicht nur" at the start. In the writing and speaking parts of Goethe-Zertifikat C1, telc Deutsch C1 and TestDaF, and in the grammar section of the DSH, these structures make your German noticeably more mature. Work calmly first, then build up speed.
