C1.1 Interactive Exercises
The first stage of level C1: Genitiv-Präpositionen, Nominalstil ↔ Verbalstil, nominalised adjectives, Funktionsverbgefüge and Partizipialattribute.
C1.1 Exercises: Nominalstil, Attribute and Genitiv
This is the first stop on your C1 journey. At this stage you get to grips with the structures that give German its weighty, academic sound: the Nominalstil, built by turning verbs into nouns (Die Überprüfung der Daten ergab …), prepositions that work with the Genitiv (während, trotz, aufgrund), and the long descriptions packed in front of a noun with extended participle constructions. Add the noun-verb combinations known as Funktionsverbgefüge (in Frage stellen, zur Verfügung stehen), the structures that replace the Passiv and the Rezipientenpassiv, adjective-preposition combinations and the logic of word formation (Wortbildung), and the skeleton of written and formal German emerges in full.
You progress step by step, finishing one topic before moving on to the next. As soon as you mark your answer, a short explanation makes it clear why it is correct or which rule tripped you up, so you close the gap right then. This stage was designed especially for students who have just moved up to C1 and are wrestling seriously with the Nominalstil for the first time; it also builds a solid base when preparing for the reading and writing sections of the Goethe-Zertifikat C1 and telc Deutsch C1 exams.
