B2.2 Exercises: Konjunktiv and Advanced Subordinate Clauses

This page is the second stage of B2: it takes the foundation you laid in the first stage to the structures that show your German at a truly advanced level. With Konjunktiv II you build unreal and unrealised situations (Wenn ich Zeit gehabt hätte, wäre ich gekommen) and learn "as if" structures with als ob; then you move on to reported speech (indirekte Rede) with Konjunktiv I (Er sagte, er sei krank). At sentence level you practise telling apart relative clauses with prepositions and clauses of time, purpose, result and concession (konzessiv), and finally building comparative structures correctly. In other words, your command of advanced mood and connectors grows hand in hand.

You can practise the topics separately and focus on the type of subordinate clause or Konjunktiv form where you feel weakest. A short explanation appears with every question; because you see the reason for the correct answer, next time you build the same structure through its logic rather than from memory. This stage makes a difference in the writing and grammar sections, especially for students who want to consolidate B2 and are preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat B2 or telc Deutsch B2 exam.
