B2.2 · Finalsätze

Finalsätze: um … zu / damit (clauses of purpose: same or different subject)

In a clause of purpose, um … zu is used when the subject is the same (Ich lerne, um zu bestehen) and damit when it is different (Ich erkläre es, damit du es verstehst). um … zu takes the infinitive; damit introduces a subordinate clause (verb at the end). You will work out the correct form yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the verbal expression of purpose (Verbalstil) with its nominal form (Nominalstil).

B2 Clauses of Purpose: um … zu and damit Exercises

Clauses of purpose (Finalsätze) state the intention behind an action, i.e. they answer the question "what for?". German offers two ways of doing this. If the main clause and the subordinate clause have the same subject, the infinitive structure "um … zu" is used; the subject is not repeated and the verb goes to the end together with "zu": "Ich lerne fleißig, um die Goethe-Prüfung zu bestehen." If the subjects are different, the connector "damit" is used; as this is a real subordinate clause, the conjugated verb moves to the very end: "Die Lehrerin spricht langsam, damit alle Studenten sie verstehen." With separable verbs, "zu" goes between the prefix and the stem: "um aufzustehen", "um anzurufen". The key point is always whether the subjects are the same or different.

📌
Golden rule: One subject → um…zu (the subject is not stated); two different subjects → damit is required.

Here you compare the subjects and decide whether "um … zu" or "damit" is needed; after each answer an explanation shows the source of the error (subject agreement, verb position or the position of "zu"). This way you reinforce the rule on real sentences rather than in the abstract. Expressing intentions and reasons fluently has a direct effect on your score in the writing and speaking sections of the Goethe-Zertifikat B2, telc B2 and TestDaF, so this exercise is for learners who want to train exactly this structure before the exam.
