B2.2 · Vergleichssätze

Irreale Vergleichssätze: als ob / als wenn (unreal comparisons: "as if")

als ob (als wenn) makes an unreal comparison: it means »as if …«, is used with Konjunktiv II, and the finite verb goes to the END of the clause (Er tut so, als ob er krank wäre). You will work out the correct form yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match each main clause with the unreal comparison that fits its meaning.

B2 Unreal Comparisons (als ob / als) – Exercises

Unreal comparison clauses are formed with Konjunktiv II to present a situation as if it were real. If you use "als ob" (or "als wenn"), the finite verb goes to the end of the subordinate clause: "Er tut so, als ob er alles wüsste." You can express the same meaning with "als" alone; then the finite verb comes straight after "als": "Er tut so, als wüsste er alles." The main clause often contains "so", and because the situation being compared is not real, Konjunktiv II (wüsste, hätte, wäre) is normally used; with some verbs "würde + Infinitiv" is also possible (als würde er alles wissen); for the past, hätte/wäre + Partizip II is used: "Sie sieht aus, als hätte sie die ganze Nacht nicht geschlafen."

📌
Golden rule: "als ob" forms an unreal comparison and usually takes Konjunktiv II (in written German also Konjunktiv I); the verb goes to the end: "…, als ob er krank wäre".

Two things are tested here at once: the position of the verb with "als ob" versus "als", and the correct Konjunktiv II form. When you make a mistake, the explanation shows where you went wrong, so you grasp the rule by seeing it rather than memorising it. Because this structure makes you sound like an advanced user in writing and speaking, it is valuable preparation for Goethe-Zertifikat B2, telc B2 and TestDaF. After a few rounds, inverted constructions such as "als wüsste er" become automatic, and you can use them comfortably both in exam texts and in formal everyday German.
