B2.2 · Modalsätze

Modalsätze: indem, ohne dass, statt dass (means, absence, alternative)

indem says how, or by what means, an action is done; ohne dass (ohne … zu) says that something expected does not happen; (an)statt dass (statt … zu) expresses an alternative or contrast. In all of them the verb goes to the end of the subordinate clause. You will find the right conjunction yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

B2 Clauses of Manner and Means (Modalsätze): indem, dadurch dass, ohne … zu, anstatt … zu – Exercises

Modalsätze describe how, or by what means, an action takes place. "indem" and "dadurch, dass" introduce subordinate clauses, so the finite verb goes to the end: "Du verbesserst dein Hörverstehen, indem du täglich Podcasts hörst." The same meaning can be built with "dadurch, dass": "Dadurch, dass sie laut liest, merkt sie sich neue Wörter besser." "ohne … zu" expresses that an action happens without another, expected action: "Er bestand die Prüfung, ohne sich zu stressen." When one thing is done instead of another, "anstatt … zu" is used: "Anstatt zu wiederholen, fing sie ein neues Kapitel an." An important restriction: with "ohne … zu" and "anstatt … zu" both actions must have the same subject; if the subjects differ, "ohne dass" / "anstatt dass" is preferred.

📌
Golden rule: "indem" (or "dadurch, dass") for the method; if the subjects are the same, "ohne … zu" for something missing and "(an)statt … zu" for a substitute.

As soon as you choose the conjunction and complete the sentence, you see why each choice is needed: why did the verb go to the end, or why was "ohne dass" needed instead of "ohne zu"? This way you learn the rule from your own mistakes rather than as an abstract list. Because structures such as "indem" and "anstatt … zu" make your style more academic, they make a difference in the writing and speaking parts of Goethe-Zertifikat B2, telc B2 and TestDaF; used correctly and naturally, they raise both your grammar score and the variety of your sentences.
