B2.2 · Indirekte Rede

Indirekte Rede (Konjunktiv I: sei, habe …)

Konjunktiv I is used to report what someone else said: sein → sei, haben → habe, verb → 3rd person singular -e (er gehe). It is common in newspapers and the news. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the Indikativ form with its form in reported speech. If Konj. I = Indikativ, switch to Konj. II.

B2 · INDIREKTE REDE
Reported Speech in German (Indirekte Rede)

Reported speech passes on what someone else said while keeping a distance from it, and it requires Konjunktiv I. It is a cornerstone of news and academic language.

📌
Golden rule: Reported speech uses Konjunktiv I: er sagt, er habe / er sei; when the form is identical to the Indikativ, switch to Konjunktiv II (or, if needed, würde + Infinitiv).

This page reinforces turning direct speech into reported speech and choosing the verb form. You will meet it again and again in the listening and writing tasks of TestDaF and telc B2–C1.
