B2.2 · Komparativsätze

Komparativsätze: je … desto / umso (proportional comparison)

The je … desto/umso pattern says that two things increase or decrease in proportion: in the subordinate clause beginning with je + comparative the verb goes to the END, and in the main clause continuing with desto/umso + comparative it goes in 2nd POSITION (Je mehr ich übe, desto besser werde ich). You will work out the correct form yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the je clause with the desto/umso clause that fits its meaning. Both halves contain a comparative.

B2 · KOMPARATIVSAETZE JE DESTO
B2 Proportional Clauses: je … desto / je … umso Exercises

Proportional clauses say that two quantities increase or decrease together: as one side changes, so does the other. In German this structure is formed with "je … desto" (or its synonym "je … umso"), and both parts require a comparative. The main thing to watch is word order: the first part, beginning with "je", is a subordinate clause, so the conjugated verb goes to the end; in the second part, beginning with "desto/umso", the verb follows immediately, i.e. in second position. Example: "Je mehr ich lerne, desto besser verstehe ich." Another: "Je länger der Vortrag dauerte, umso unruhiger wurden die Zuhörer." Seeing the comparative on both sides (mehr … besser, länger … unruhiger) is the core of the structure.

📌
Golden rule: Je + comparative sends the verb to the end; desto/umso + comparative pulls the verb forward: "Je mehr du übst, desto besser wirst du."

Here you choose the correct comparative and put the verb at the end of the subordinate clause and in second position in the main clause. When you make a mistake, you are shown exactly why the verb position changes or which comparative is needed, so you move on without reinforcing the error. The topic is especially useful for Goethe-Zertifikat B2, telc B2 and TestDaF candidates, because "je … desto" is one of the markers of fluent, academic language that exams frequently test. The more you repeat it, the more you build the structure in the right order without thinking.
