B2.2 · Konzessivsätze

Konzessivsätze: obwohl, zwar…aber, dennoch (concession and contrast, advanced)

Advanced connectors of concession and contrast: obwohl/obgleich/obschon (subordinate clause, verb at the end), wenngleich (although), zwar … aber (admittedly … but), trotzdem/dennoch (nevertheless; main clause, verb in pos. 2). You will work out the correct form yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the concessive first half with the second half that fits its meaning.

B2 Concessive Clauses (Konzessivsätze): obwohl, trotz, trotzdem, dennoch, wenngleich – Exercises

Concessive clauses say that a result happens despite an obstacle, and the most important point is that the type of connector determines the sentence structure. The subordinating conjunction "obwohl" pushes the conjugated verb to the end: "Obwohl es stark regnete, gingen wir spazieren." "Trotz", by contrast, is a preposition and takes the genitive: "Trotz des starken Regens gingen wir spazieren." "Trotzdem" and "dennoch", on the other hand, are adverbs that link two main clauses; when they stand at the start of the sentence, verb and subject are inverted: "Es regnete stark; trotzdem gingen wir spazieren." "Wenngleich", typical of written and formal German, sends the verb to the end like "obwohl": "Der Plan war ehrgeizig, wenngleich er Risiken barg." Mixing up these three types (conjunction, preposition, adverb) is one of the most common mistakes at B2.

📌
Golden rule: The advanced concessive connectors obgleich/wenngleich send the verb to the end; auch wenn covers both real and hypothetical concession in one pattern.

Here you choose the right connector and put the verb in its place; when you make a mistake, the explanation tells you whether the problem is the genitive after "trotz" or the verb–subject inversion after the adverb. This way you grasp the logic behind them instead of memorising four or five structures one by one. The topic is directly useful for Goethe-Zertifikat B2, telc B2 and TestDaF candidates who want to move to fluent, formal language in the written and oral exams; the more you repeat it, the more confidently you build these structures in your own sentences.
