B2.2 · Relativsätze II

Relativsätze mit Präposition (+ wo/was) (relative clauses with prepositions)

If the relative clause contains a preposition, the preposition comes before the relative pronoun and determines the case: der Mann, mit dem ich spreche; das Thema, über das wir reden. wo can be used for places, and was for something indefinite or when the whole clause is the reference. You will work out the correct form yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: choose the preposition + pronoun at the start of the relative clause. Look at the verb's preposition and the noun's gender.

B2 Relative Clauses with Prepositions (Relativsätze mit Präposition) – Exercises

In relative clauses with a preposition, the relative pronoun (Relativpronomen) links the subordinate clause, which describes a noun in the main clause, to a preposition. The preposition comes before the pronoun, and the conjugated verb always goes to the end of the subordinate clause: "Das ist der Tisch, auf dem das Buch liegt." The case of the pronoun is determined by the preposition's government (Rektion): here "auf" expresses location, so it takes the dative ("auf dem"); in "Der Mann, an den ich denke", however, "denken an" requires the accusative ("an den"). Gender and number depend on the noun: "die Frau, mit der …" (dat. feminine), "die Kollegen, mit denen …" (dat. plural). For things, the pattern "wo(r) + preposition" is sometimes used as well (mostly in informal speech): "der Stuhl, auf dem / worauf ich sitze."

📌
Golden rule: In a relative clause the preposition comes BEFORE the relative pronoun and also determines its case: mit dem Mann, über das Buch.

When you choose the right preposition, relative pronoun and case, you are shown which preposition governs which case and why the verb goes at the end. This way you get past typical mix-ups such as "an wen / an den" or "in dem / in das" by seeing the rule, not by trial and error. As this structure is crucial for combining sentences in the writing section (Schreiben) and for understanding reading texts, it is very useful for Goethe-Zertifikat B2, telc B2 and TestDaF candidates; the more you repeat it, the more automatic prepositional government becomes and the less time you lose hesitating in the exam.
