B2.2 · Konsekutivsätze

Konsekutivsätze: so … dass / sodass (clauses of result)

Konsekutivsätze express a result or effect: the main clause often contains 'so', the subordinate clause 'dass', and the finite verb goes to the end (Es war so kalt, dass wir blieben). You will work out the correct construction yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match each sentence giving a cause with the result clause that fits its meaning.

B2 Result Clauses (Konsekutivsätze): so … dass and sodass – Exercises

Result clauses (Konsekutivsätze) express the result of an action or situation – the meaning "so … that". There are two basic patterns. In the first, the degree is stressed with "so" in front of an adjective or adverb; the result comes in a "dass" clause and the verb goes to the end: "Es war so kalt, dass wir zu Hause blieben." Here "so" and "kalt" belong together. In the second pattern the result is linked directly with "sodass": "Der Zug hatte Verspätung, sodass wir den Anschluss verpassten." In both cases "dass/sodass" starts a subordinate clause, so the finite verb always moves to the end of the clause.

📌
Golden rule: In a result clause sodass sends the verb to the end; for emphasis, use "so + adjective" in the main clause and "dass" in the subordinate clause.

Here you choose between "so … dass" and "sodass" and put the verb in the right position. When you make a mistake, you see where the problem lies: was the degree word in the wrong place, or was the verb order in the subordinate clause wrong? This kind of reasoned repetition is the fastest way to move a pattern from memorisation to automatic use. The topic is aimed at B2 learners moving into formal and academic German and at anyone who wants to express cause and effect fluently in the writing and speaking parts of Goethe-Zertifikat B2, telc B2 and TestDaF.
