B2.2 · Temporale Nebensätze

Temporale Nebensätze: während, seitdem, sobald (time clauses)

Time clauses express simultaneity or sequence, and the verb goes to the end: während (while), seitdem (since), bis (until), sobald (as soon as), bevor (before), nachdem (after). You will work out the correct connector yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the time connector with its English meaning.

B2 · TEMPORALE NEBENSAETZE ERWEITERT
B2 Advanced Time Clauses (sobald, solange, seitdem, bis, sooft) – Exercises

Time clauses (temporale Nebensätze) show when, for how long or how often something happens; after the connector the conjugated verb always goes to the end of the clause. At B2 the differences in meaning become sharper: "sobald" expresses something that follows immediately, "solange" a simultaneous duration, "seitdem" a duration from a starting point, "bis" something that lasts up to a limit, and "sooft" repetition. Example: "Sobald ich die Prüfung bestanden habe, suche ich einen Job." "Seitdem sie in Wien wohnt, spricht sie viel besser Deutsch." If the sentence begins with the subordinate clause, the verb comes straight after the comma, in second position: "Solange es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause."

📌
Golden rule: nachdem shows that something happened earlier: if the subordinate clause is in the Plusquamperfekt, the main clause is in the Präteritum/Perfekt – the tenses shift by one step.

As you choose the right connector and put the verb at the end, each answer is followed by an explanation of why "bis" is needed instead of "seitdem" or where the verb should go, so you correct your mistake on the spot. This helps you grasp the fine differences in meaning between the connectors by trying them out rather than by rote. Since the ability to build fluent, connected sentences is required in the writing and speaking sections of the Goethe-Zertifikat B2, telc B2 and TestDaF, the topic adds a time dimension to your sentences as you move to formal and academic language.
