B1.1 — Tense and Case: Exercises for the First Stage of B1

In this first stage of B1 you now narrate the past in layers: the Präteritum, the past tense of written language, and the Plusquamperfekt, which highlights what had happened earlier ("Als ich ankam, war der Zug schon abgefahren"). The last link in the case system, the Genitiv, together with the n-Deklination, clarifies possession and how proper names are declined. Then you settle the "Wo?"/"Wohin?" distinction with Wechselpräpositionen and position verbs (stehen, liegen, hängen), and add colour to your expression with adjective endings and comparative sentences. Finally, reflexive verbs with prepositions (sich freuen auf) and relative clauses (Relativsätze) link your sentences and make your speech more fluent.

Here you can practise each topic separately, moving one by one from the Präteritum to relative clauses and spotting your gaps immediately. The moment you answer a question, a short explanation appears, and you see the logic behind a pattern instead of memorising it. This stage gives students who want to put B1 on a solid footing, and those preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 and telc Deutsch B1 exams, the chance to consolidate their grammar in a way that will serve them in the exam.
