B1.1 · Reflexive + Präp.

Reflexive Verben mit Präposition (reflexive verb + preposition)

Many reflexive verbs go with a fixed preposition, and that preposition decides the case: sich freuen auf+A (to look forward to), sich freuen über+A (to be pleased about something that has happened), sich interessieren für+A, sich ärgern über+A, sich erinnern an+A, sich beschäftigen mit+D. You will work out the right preposition yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the reflexive verb with its fixed preposition and case. Learn the two together.

B1 · REFLEXIVE VERBEN PRAEPOSITION
B1 Reflexive Verbs with Prepositions: sich freuen auf, sich interessieren für, sich ärgern über

In German some reflexive verbs are used with a fixed preposition, and that preposition decides which case (Kasus) follows. "sich freuen auf" + Akkusativ means looking forward to something in the future: "Ich freue mich auf das Wochenende." "sich interessieren für" also takes the Akkusativ: "Sie interessiert sich für Politik." "sich ärgern über" again needs the Akkusativ: "Wir ärgern uns über den Lärm." As you can see, the reflexive pronoun (mich, dich, sich, uns) comes right after the conjugated verb, while the preposition and its object stand at the end of the sentence. The safest approach with these verbs is to learn the right preposition and the right case together as one pattern.

📌
Golden rule: The preposition of a reflexive verb is fixed and decides the case: "sich freuen auf + Akkusativ", "sich interessieren für"; for things, use da(r)-/wo(r)-.

The interactive exercise on this page asks you to put the right preposition and reflexive pronoun in the gap; after every answer you get feedback with an explanation. So you see not just "right/wrong" but also why über is used instead of auf, or why the Akkusativ is needed. That way you notice your mistake on the spot and reinforce the pattern. It is a practical exercise for intermediate learners preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 or telc B1 who want to use these prepositional patterns confidently in speaking and writing. After a few rounds you will start telling apart the most often confused trio (auf, für, über) with confidence.
