B1 Plusquamperfekt Exercises: the Past Before the Past (nachdem …)

The Plusquamperfekt is used for an event that was already over before another event in the past; in short, "the past of the past". It is simple to form: the Präteritum form of the auxiliary "haben" or "sein" (hatte / war) + Partizip II. Verbs of movement and change take "sein": Ich hatte schon gegessen. / Der Zug war schon abgefahren. You will meet it most often with the conjunction "nachdem", where the time relationship is clear: the earlier action is in the Plusquamperfekt and the later one in the Präteritum or Perfekt. Example: Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ging ich spazieren. Note that the verb goes to the end of the subordinate clause ("…gegessen hatte"). If the sentence starts with "nachdem", the main clause that follows opens with the conjugated verb: Nachdem er aufgewacht war, frühstückte er.

📌
Golden rule: the Plusquamperfekt is the past before the past: the past form of the auxiliary (hatte/war) + Partizip II; "Nachdem er gegessen hatte …"

The interactive exercise on this page tests, with real examples, whether you choose hatte or war and place the Partizip II correctly in the sentence. After every answer you get explanatory feedback: why it is "war abgefahren" and not "hatte abgefahren", why the verb goes to the end in a "nachdem" clause, all explained briefly. So you correct your mistake by the next question. It is ideal for B1 learners who are not yet fully confident with the Plusquamperfekt and the "nachdem" structure. Anyone preparing for Goethe-Zertifikat B1 or telc B1 can use this practice to reinforce the sequence of tenses in the written part and telling past events in order in Sprechen.
