Komparativ & Superlativ (attributiv) (comparison before the noun)

When comparative and superlative adjectives come before a noun, they take both the comparison ending -er/-(e)st- and the case ending: der schnellere Wagen, das schnellste Auto. Irregular: gut→besser→best-, hoch→höher→höchst-, viel→mehr→meist-. You will find the correct form yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the adjective with its degree and the ending it takes before the noun. First the degree, then the declension ending.

B1 Exercises on Comparatives and Superlatives Before Nouns (Attributiv)

In German, adjectives before a noun take a declension ending and can also be compared. For the comparative -er is added to the adjective, for the superlative -(e)st, and on top of that comes the ending that matches the article: der schnellere Zug (the faster train), die schnellste S-Bahn (the fastest S-Bahn), das beste Buch (the best book). So you build the ending in two stages: first the degree (schnell → schneller → schnellst-), then agreement with the article (ein schnellerer Zug, mit dem schnelleren Zug). Watch out for irregular forms: gut → besser → der beste, hoch → höher → der höchste. Word order stays normal; the adjective sits between the article and the noun: Ich nehme den schnelleren Zug.

📌
Golden rule: Before a noun, comparatives and superlatives first take -er/-st and then the adjective ending: "der schnellere Zug", "das schnellste Auto".

When you choose an ending in the interactive exercise, a short note appears explaining why that article and that degree require that ending, so it does not just say "incorrect". This way you settle schnellere or schnelleren, beste or besten by seeing the rule rather than by trial and error. It is ideal for B1 learners who get stuck on attributive declension, and when preparing for the writing part of Goethe-Zertifikat B1 and telc B1, and for the Sprachbausteine part of telc, it helps you spot and correct your mistakes quickly.
