B1 · WECHSELPRAEPOSITIONEN
Prepositions of Direction and Place (Wechselpräpositionen)

Nine two-way prepositions can take either the Akkusativ or the Dativ, and the choice depends on the question. Movement or location: that distinction decides everything.

📌
Golden rule: For direction (movement) use Wohin? + Akkusativ, for location (a fixed place) Wo? + Dativ: "in die Schule" but "in der Schule".

Because this page asks the Wohin/Wo question in every sentence, the right case becomes a reflex. In Goethe and telc B1 it is the most frequently tested topic when describing places.
