B1.1 · Relativsätze

Relativsätze (relative clauses · Nominativ and Akkusativ)

The relative pronoun (der/die/das) takes its gender and number from the noun it refers to, and its case from its role in the subordinate clause. In a relative clause the verb goes to the end. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the noun and the clause with the correct relative pronoun. Look at the verb's preposition too.

German Relative Clauses (Relativsätze)

A relative clause describes a noun in more detail with a subordinate clause and makes the sentence flow better. The tricky part is the form of the relative pronoun.

📌
Golden rule: the relative pronoun takes its gender and number from the main noun and its case from its job in the clause: Dativ plural denen, possessive dessen/deren; the verb goes to the end.

This page reinforces choosing the pronoun and putting the verb at the end, step by step. In the writing part of Goethe and telc B1 you need it to combine sentences.
