B1 Genitiv Exercises: Possessive Noun Phrases (das Auto des Vaters)

The Genitiv is the case that shows who something belongs to or how two nouns are linked; it corresponds to a phrase like "the father's car" in English. The article changes here: masculine and neuter nouns take des instead of der/das, while feminine and plural nouns take der. The trickiest point is the -s or -es ending added to masculine and neuter nouns. Nouns with one syllable or ending in -s/-ß/-z usually take -es (das Auto des Mannes, der Titel des Buches); the others take -s. The possessor noun comes after the noun it possesses: die Farbe der Blume, das Haus meiner Eltern. Feminine nouns take no ending, so you need to think about the article and the gender together.

📌
Golden rule: In the Genitiv, masculine/neuter nouns take the ending -s/-es and the article changes der/das → des; with feminine nouns die → der (no ending on the noun): "das Auto des Mannes".

When you choose the right article (des/der) and the -s/-es ending in the interactive exercise on this page, you see a short note explaining why it has to be that way; working through examples, you understand which rule applies depending on the gender and ending of the noun. It suits B1 learners who want to use the Genitiv correctly in speaking and writing. While preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 and telc B1, you can spot and correct typical mistakes in possessive phrases on your own and repeat as often as you like at your own pace.
