C1.1 · Substantivierung

Substantivierte Adjektive & Partizipien (adjectives and participles used as nouns)

When adjectives and participles become nouns, they are capitalised and take adjective endings (der Deutsche, der Reisende). After etwas/nichts/viel they take the neuter ending -es (etwas Gutes); after der/die they take weak endings. You will work out the correct form yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match nominalised adjectives and participles from press and legal language with their English meaning.

C1 Adjectives Used as Nouns (Substantivierte Adjektive) Exercises

In German, when you capitalise an adjective and put an article or determiner in front of it, it becomes a noun but keeps its adjective ending: der Reisende (the traveller), ein Reisender, die Angestellten (the employees). When referring to people, the article shows the gender; for abstract ideas the neuter form is used: das Gute, das Wichtige. The trickiest part is the structures after etwas, nichts, viel, wenig – here the adjective is neuter with the ending -es: etwas Neues, nichts Besonderes, viel Interessantes. After alles, however, the ending is -e: alles Gute. Because the ending depends on the determiner in front of it, the difference between der Deutsche / ein Deutscher / die Deutschen matters a great deal at C1.

📌
Golden rule: A nominalised adjective is capitalised but takes the adjective ending that matches the article: der Deutsche, ein Deutscher.

After you choose the correct ending and capitalisation in each sentence, you get instant feedback with an explanation; it does not just say "correct/incorrect" but shows why -es or -en is used, linking it to the determiner. That way you reinforce the difference between etwas Neues and das Neue by seeing the rule rather than memorising it. Since this structure comes up in both reading and writing when you prepare for Goethe-Zertifikat C1, telc Deutsch C1, TestDaF and the DSH, spotting your mistakes at sentence level saves you time in the exam.
