C1.1 · Partizipialkonstruktionen

Erweiterte Partizipialkonstruktionen (extended participial phrases)

In academic German, an extended participial phrase compresses a relative clause: »das vom Autor geschriebene Buch« = »das Buch, das der Autor geschrieben hat«. Partizip I (ongoing/active) and Partizip II (completed/passive) are placed before the noun together with their modifiers. You will work out the correct analysis yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the adverbial participle group with the subordinate clause that spells out its meaning.

C1 · ERWEITERTE PARTIZIPIALKONSTRUKTIONEN
C1 Extended Participial Phrases (erweiterte Partizipialattribute) Exercises

An extended participial phrase is formed when a Partizip I or Partizip II takes its own complements in front of it and the whole group is placed between the article and the noun. In other words, you compress a subordinate clause into an adjective phrase: instead of "der Vertrag, der seit Jahren besteht" you say "der seit Jahren bestehende Vertrag". Partizip I (bestehend) carries an active, ongoing action, while Partizip II carries a passive or completed one; compare "die im letzten Jahr unterzeichnete Vereinbarung" (signed) with "die wachsende Nachfrage" (growing). This dense structure is especially common in legal, academic and newspaper texts, because it packs a great deal of information into a single noun phrase.

📌
Golden rule: A participle before a noun takes adjective endings: Partizip I (-end) is active, Partizip II gives a passive/completed meaning.

The exercise works on three things at once: the participle ending, the internal order of the phrase, and turning the phrase back into a subordinate clause. After every answer you get feedback with an explanation; you see why Partizip I rather than II is needed or where the ending comes from, so you understand the mistake instead of memorising it. If you are preparing for Goethe-Zertifikat C1, telc Deutsch C1, TestDaF or the DSH, this structure comes up again and again in both reading and writing; with regular practice you will move from decoding it to building it yourself.
