C1.1 · Rezipientenpassiv

Rezipientenpassiv: bekommen + Partizip II (recipient passive)

The Rezipientenpassiv (bekommen-Passiv) makes the Dativ recipient the subject: »Ich bekomme ein Buch geschenkt« instead of »Mir wird ein Buch geschenkt«. Structure: bekommen/kriegen/erhalten + Partizip II. It is only formed with verbs that take a Dativ object (helfen, schenken, empfehlen). You will work out the correct form yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the werden-Passiv sentence with a Dativ recipient to its Rezipientenpassiv equivalent in the same tense.

C1 Exercises: Rezipientenpassiv (Recipient Passive)

The Rezipientenpassiv is a special passive structure that moves the recipient, normally the indirect object (Dativobjekt), into subject position. Instead of "werden" it is formed with the auxiliaries "bekommen", "kriegen" or the more formal "erhalten" plus the Partizip II: "Man schenkte ihm das Buch" becomes "Er bekam das Buch geschenkt" in the Rezipientenpassiv, so the recipient is now the subject in the nominative. By the same logic you say "Er bekam das Auto repariert" instead of "Ihm wurde das Auto repariert". It usually works with verbs that involve giving, showing, repairing or passing something on to someone (schenken, erklären, reparieren, zusenden); "kriegen" leans towards spoken language and "erhalten" towards written and formal texts.

📌
Golden rule: The recipient passive is formed with bekommen/kriegen + Partizip II; the Dativ object of the active sentence becomes the subject: Er bekommt es geschenkt.

Right after each answer, the interactive exercises explain why that auxiliary and that Partizip II are correct; step by step you consolidate the difference between the classic passive with "werden" and the recipient passive with "bekommen", and how the indirect object turns into the subject. When preparing for Goethe-Zertifikat C1, telc Deutsch C1, TestDaF and DSH, you will often meet this structure in reading and listening, and it earns points in written production. To make the pattern stick and recognise it without hesitation in the exam, simply work through the questions one after another.
