C1.1 · Partizipialattribute

Partizipialattribute (das lesende Kind / das gelesene Buch)

A participle can act as an attributive adjective: Partizip I (Infinitiv + d) = active, simultaneous → das lesende Kind (the child who is reading); Partizip II = passive/completed → das gelesene Buch (the book that has been read). All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the participle used as an adjective with the relative clause that spells out its meaning.

C1 · PARTIZIPIALATTRIBUTE
Partizipialattribute – Participles Used as Adjectives

Partizip I and Partizip II take adjective endings before a noun and compress a whole relative clause into a single word. The logic comes down to one point: for an active meaning use Partizip I, for a passive/completed one use Partizip II.

📌
Golden rule: For active and ongoing meaning Partizip I = Infinitiv + d ("das lesende Kind"); for passive/completed meaning Partizip II ("das gelesene Buch"); both take adjective endings.

At every step this page has you choose the right participle and checks the ending, so you get better at decoding the dense structures of academic texts. At C1 this is the backbone of the reading and writing parts of TestDaF and telc C1 Hochschule.
