C1.1 · Adjektive + Präposition

Adjektive mit festen Präpositionen (adjective + preposition patterns)

At advanced level many adjectives form a fixed pattern with a particular preposition, and this determines the case: stolz auf+A, fähig zu+D, abhängig von+D, verantwortlich für+A, überzeugt von+D, reich an+D. You will work out the correct preposition yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the C1 adjective with its fixed complement (preposition + case, or Genitiv).

C1 Exercises: Adjectives with Prepositions (Adjektive mit Präpositionen)

In German many adjectives need a particular preposition to complete their meaning, and this preposition usually governs a fixed case: stolz auf (+ Akkusativ), abhängig von (+ Dativ), reich an (+ Dativ), interessiert an (+ Dativ) or verantwortlich für (+ Akkusativ). What makes the structure difficult is not only memorising the case the preposition requires, but also expanding the adjective phrase within the sentence: in "Sie ist stolz auf ihre an einer deutschen Universität abgeschlossene Promotion" the noun governed by the preposition is preceded by an expanded attribute (erweitertes Attribut). This is exactly the layer expected at C1: the right preposition, the right case and a detailed attribute in front of the noun.

📌
Golden rule: Even at advanced level the rule is the same: the preposition governs the case; abstract relations are mostly expressed with an/über/von, and the fixed pattern has to be learnt by heart.

The exercise here works through each sentence one by one: you put the preposition, the case or the attribute phrase into a gap and, as soon as you answer, you get short feedback telling you whether it is correct and why. That way you make the "auf or an, Akkusativ or Dativ" decision on the basis of a reason rather than by trial and error. It is particularly useful for anyone preparing for Goethe-Zertifikat C1, telc Deutsch C1, TestDaF and DSH, because adjective–preposition combinations and expanded attributes are needed in the written sections of these exams (and, in the DSH, in the language-structures section) and are error-prone. After a few rounds the right preposition starts to come to mind by itself.
