C1.1 · Infinitiv Perfekt/Passiv

Infinitiv Perfekt und Infinitiv Passiv (past and passive infinitive)

gelesen zu haben, gelesen zu werden, gelesen worden zu sein: the past and passive forms of the infinitive appear in zu constructions, with modal verbs and in Futur II. Practise building the forms and reading the time relationship in five steps. The sentences are in German, the explanations in English.

Recognise: match the dass clause with its zu-infinitive equivalent. An action that happened earlier takes the Infinitiv Perfekt; a passive action takes the passive form.

Exercise: Infinitiv Perfekt and Infinitiv Passiv (C1)

This exercise practises the four forms of the infinitive: the simple infinitive, the Infinitiv Perfekt (gelesen haben, angekommen sein), the Infinitiv Passiv (gelesen werden) and the past passive infinitive (gelesen worden sein). The position of zu, the choice between haben and sein, the difference between worden and geworden, and clusters with modal verbs and Futur II are covered step by step.

These forms are common in press reports, minutes and academic texts: when reporting a claim, drawing a conclusion about the past or showing that an action was completed before the main clause. Getting the time and voice relationships right lets you both read and write complex sentences correctly.
