German summary writing exercise (B2–C1)

The tools of a summary are limited: patterns for the opening sentence, reporting verbs and phrases for rounding off. This exercise matches each phrase with its function and then trains the rules of a summary: Präsens, one third of the length, no comment, no details.

The two mistakes that cost the most points in exams are writing your own opinion and copying sentences from the text. The explanations in the exercise separate the two with examples; choosing the reporting verb to match the tone of the text is also practised.
