A2.1 · Wechselpräpositionen

Wechselpräpositionen: Wo? / Wohin? (direction or position)

Wechselpräpositionen (in, an, auf, unter, über, vor, hinter, neben, zwischen) take two cases: movement/direction (Wohin?) → Akkusativ; position (Wo?) → Dativ. Ich gehe in die Schule (Wohin → Akk) ↔ Ich bin in der Schule (Wo → Dat). You will work out the correct case yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the Wohin? verb with the Wo? verb, the long form with the short form, and the question with the answer.

A2 · WECHSELPRAEPOSITIONEN
A2 Wechselpräpositionen Exercises: Wo? Dativ, Wohin? Akkusativ

Wechselpräpositionen (in, an, auf, über, unter, vor, hinter, neben, zwischen) are one of the most important A2 topics in German, because the same preposition can take two different cases in a sentence. The key is a single question: "Wo?" (where) describes a position and takes the Dativ, "Wohin?" (where to) describes a movement and takes the Akkusativ. For example, when describing a state you say "Ich bin in der Schule" (Wo? → Dativ); but when describing a movement you have to say "Ich gehe in die Schule" (Wohin? → Akkusativ). The same logic works on the table too: "Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch" but "Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch".

📌
Golden rule: With direction (Wohin?) use the Akkusativ; with place/position (Wo?) use the Dativ.

There is only one key to this topic: before you build the sentence, ask "Wo or Wohin?". If there is a position, the Dativ follows (in der Schule); if there is movement, the Akkusativ (in die Schule). In the exercise you first ask this question and choose the correct article (dem, der / den, die); if you get it wrong, a short note shows why the Dativ or the Akkusativ is needed, so you grasp the distinction through its logic instead of memorising it. Once this reflex is in place, you become an A2 learner who uses these prepositions correctly in everyday conversation. Because Goethe-Zertifikat A2 and telc Deutsch A2 constantly ask for sentences about both position and direction, this distinction gives you a clear advantage in the exam.
