A2 · TRENNBARE VERBEN
German Separable Verbs (Trennbare Verben)

Separable verbs are verbs whose prefix breaks away from the stem in certain situations. What many learners forget most often is where the prefix goes.

📌
Golden rule: In a main clause in the present or past the prefix splits off and goes to the end: aufstehen → ich stehe auf; in a subordinate clause and with a modal verb it stays joined.

In five steps, this page helps you tell apart when the prefix splits off and when it stays joined. You will meet this all the time in sentences about daily routines in Goethe and telc A2.
