B2.1 · Nomen + Präposition

Nomen mit Präposition (noun + preposition patterns)

Like the verb or adjective they come from, many nouns form fixed patterns with a particular preposition, and that preposition determines the case: die Frage nach+D, der Grund für+A, das Interesse an+D, die Angst vor+D, die Hoffnung auf+A, die Teilnahme an+D. You will work out the correct preposition yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the noun with the complement that begins with its preposition. Each noun needs a different preposition.

B2 · NOMEN MIT PRAEPOSITION
B2 Noun + Preposition Patterns (Nomen mit Präposition): das Interesse an, die Angst vor, der Grund für, die Frage nach

At B2 some nouns form fixed patterns with their own preposition, and that preposition usually requires a particular case. "das Interesse an" always takes the dative: "Sie hat großes Interesse an Politik." "die Angst vor" also takes the dative: "Seine Angst vor der Prüfung war groß." "der Grund für", on the other hand, takes the accusative: "Das ist der Grund für seine Entscheidung." "die Frage nach" is again used with the dative: "Die Frage nach dem Sinn beschäftigt ihn." Choosing the wrong preposition or case distorts the meaning, so each noun should be learnt not on its own but as a unit with its preposition.

📌
Golden rule: Some nouns are tied to a fixed preposition; learn the preposition and the case it takes together with the noun: "die Angst vor + Dativ", "die Frage nach + Dativ".

When you choose the right preposition and the case that follows, you get an explanation of why the dative or accusative is needed and which noun goes with which preposition, so you don't just tick the right answer but also understand the logic of the pattern. Noun–preposition patterns are fundamental to building sentences in academic and formal German. Using them without mistakes in the written and oral sections gives Goethe-Zertifikat B2, telc B2 and TestDaF candidates a real advantage.
