B1.2 · Indirekte Fragen

Indirekte Fragesätze: ob / W-Wort (indirect questions)

An indirect question is a subordinate clause, and the verb goes to the end. Yes/no question → with ob (Ich weiß nicht, ob er kommt); W-question → with the question word (Ich frage, wann er kommt). You will work out the right conjunction yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the direct question with its indirect form. In an indirect question the verb goes to the end.

B1 Indirect Question (indirekte Fragesätze) Exercises

Indirect questions embed a question in a sentence instead of asking it directly. In yes/no questions the conjunction "ob" introduces the clause; in questions with a question word, W-Wörter such as wer, wann, warum do. The most important rule is that the conjugated verb always goes to the end of the subordinate clause. Compare: "Kommt er?" → "Ich weiß nicht, ob er kommt." Another example: "Wann beginnt der Kurs?" → "Kannst du mir sagen, wann der Kurs beginnt?" The verb, which in the direct question stands first ("Kommt er?") or in second position ("Wann beginnt …?"), moves to the very end in the indirect question; the main clause and the subordinate clause are separated by a comma. Understanding this shift is the key to the whole structure.

📌
Golden rule: In an indirect question the conjugated verb goes to the end: yes/no questions with ob, information questions with the W-word ("…, ob er kommt").

In the interactive exercise on this page you turn direct questions into indirect ones, and every attempt gives you feedback with an explanation. When you put the verb in the wrong place or mix up "ob" and a W-Wort, you see your mistake exactly where it happens and reinforce the rule by trying. For B1 learners who use this structure often in polite requests and in writing, and for anyone preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 or telc B1, it offers solid practice that makes a difference in both the speaking and the writing sections.
